Many of us have heard of omega-3. What’s with all the hype? Well, it happens to be one of the few fats that’s worth getting excited about. Most commonly found in foods such as fish and walnuts, this nutrient has all kinds of impressive health benefits a few if any drawbacks. Here are a few reasons why you should be upping your omega-3 intake.

It’s good for your mental health

Omega-3 is one of the best nutrients for the brain. Regularly taking cod liver oil has been linked to reducing mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. There have also been studies such as the Zutphen Elderly Study, which found those that didn’t regularly eat fish were more susceptible to cognitive deterioration diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Fish has long been viewed as good brain food and this is likely to be its omega-3 content, which few other foods are as rich in.  

It can help fight ageing

Those wanting to ward off wrinkles could also benefit from omega-3. The fatty acid can help reduce inflammation such as sunburn, which can in turn lead to dryness and wrinkles. It can also provide more moisture to the skin, similarly preventing ageing. Plenty of supplements for younger looking skin contain omega-3. Whilst these can combat UV ray damage, it’s worth noting that such supplements shouldn’t be used as an alternative to sun lotion.

It’s good for your heart

Heart disease is regularly caused by damaged blood vessels, which are often caused by inflammation. Because omega-3 is proven to reduce inflammation, a regular intake can help hugely reduce the risk of heart disease. Fish such as mackerel and salmon are great for those wanting to keep their heart healthy, as these are bursting with omega-3. Avoid deep fried fish however as these contain a lot of unhealthy fats which could have the opposite effect on your heart.

It may reduce the risk of many cancers

Many cancers are also thought to be linked to inflammation, which causes cells to start uncontrollably multiplying. As omega-3 reduces inflammation, it is believed to be an important nutrient for reducing the risk of cancer. Studies have linked high levels of omega 3 to a lower risk of developing breast cancer. That said, not all cancers may be prevented by taking omega-3, with some research even suggesting that eating lots of omega-3 may help develop prostate cancer in men.

It can fight allergies

Many allergic reactions result in inflammation. This may be inflammation of the throat causing wheezing (asthma), inflammation of the skin causing rashes (eczema) or inflammation of the eyes and nose (as with many pet allergies and hay fever). As omega-3 can help fight inflammation, ingesting lots of this nutrient could help to make allergic reaction symptoms less potent. Many studies further support this.
