Whether you live in a small home, or could use some more space for hobbies or your possessions. You can find ways to make the space you have work harder without having to resort to expensive extensions onto your home, or moving to a larger house. Here’s how you can get more space at home.
Mirrors are a great way to create an illusion of more space. If your home is cramped and a little dark, hang some large mirrors. The mirrors will bounce light back into the room, making it feel lighter. The reflections will also give the impression of larger rooms.
Get The Furniture Right
It might seem the opposite to what you might think, but an unfurnished room can actually look smaller than a furnished one. Don’t strip a room of furniture to make it seem larger. Don’t overload it with furniture though, as this will have the opposite effect to what you want. Try to keep the balance right.
If you need more room, why not make use of an underused and invest in a loft conversion. A loft conversion can give you a whole new room to use. Create a spare bedroom for guests to stay in if you don’t currently have one, or create something like a sewing room for yourself to enjoy.
Build More Storage
If your home is full of clutter, somewhere to put things away can make a real difference. If you don’t have much storage space, build some in. Built in cabinets, more bookshelves or doing something clever like building a closet space into the space under the stairs are all great ways to add some more space to get clutter away and out of sight. This frees up a lot more space for you around the house.
Take Advantage Of High Ceilings
If your house or apartment has very high ceilings, this already gives you the illusion of more space. However, you could also make the most of the height by adding a loft space. A mezzanine style loft can be used for storage, or could be turned into a sleeping loft to give you another spare bed option.
Store Away Out Of Season Clothing
Is your wardrobe overflowing? At the start of the season, take some time to pack up your out of season clothing. Storing away your big jumpers and extra coats when you don’t need them, for example, in suitcases under the bed, gives you extra space in the wardrobe. You’ll be able to see what you have much more easily.
Buy An Ottoman
Furniture that does double duty as storage is a great trick. An ottoman gives you an extra seat in the living room, but can be used to store things like blankets, extra bedding or books out of sight, but still easily accessible.
With some clever tricks and smart storage you can make better use of the space that you have at home, you can make your place feel a lot more spacious.
