As humans, we are in constant need of resources to survive. Food, shelter, transportation, workspaces all require raw materials to obtain. While some resources are renewable, some are lost forever, and our environment suffers.
But even as our activities impact our environment, we bear the brunt of it all as inhabitants. When resources become depleted, where do we turn?
In the same vein, we receive benefits from society, such as education, amenities, financial security, and cultural experiences, among others. But we don’t always have to take; we can also choose to give back to society.
So what are some of these ways we can give back to the environment and our world at large?
1. Live sustainably
You can reduce your harmful impact on your world by living sustainably. The kind of products you purchase, clothes you wear, and fuels you burn all have detrimental effects on our environment. A sustainable lifestyle involves being mindful of these things, such as purchasing more biodegradable/recyclable products, consuming less fuel, and reducing how much waste you produce by recycling old items. By doing so, you reduce your carbon footprint and the amount of greenhouse gas you create.
You can walk or cycle short distances or take the bus rather than using your car all the time. Buy less plastic and choose eco-friendly alternatives.
2. Offer eco-friendly items/services
One way to give back to your world is to avail what people are looking for. And notably, thousands of people are looking for a particular product or service. You can be a solution.
Rather than marketing synthetic products manufactured using harmful processes such as burning fossil fuels and killing animals, you can sell sustainable items instead. There are natural, clean beauty products, biodegradable sugarcane straws, and recyclable dishes you can offer. By doing so, you’re not only practicing but also encouraging a sustainable lifestyle.
3. Create job opportunities
One way to give back to your world is to create employment. You could become an entrepreneur and employer of labor. How? By finding a solution to a particular need.
Look around your community and find what’s lacking. Key into it, develop a solution, and offer it. It could be a service or a particular product. As you begin to expand, hire a team that will help you grow while also earning themselves an honorable living.
4. Give to charity
Another way to live sustainably is to donate used items to the less privileged. Look around for those clothes you no longer wear but are still good enough. Rather than burning them up and releasing harmful gases into the air, bundle them up to any charity near you. Aside from clothes, there are many equipment and accessories in your home that are no longer useful to you but may be appreciated by someone else. Give out. You’d not only be helping someone in need but also boosting your mood and mental well-being through the act of giving.
We live in a world where people feel entitled and self centred. But it is when we live not only for ourselves that we truly live. And most importantly, we would be promoting the health of mother earth through sustainable practices.
